Richard Seymour, product designer
and co-founder of Seymourpowell, believes designers have a responsibility to
get things right for their clients. And as designers, it is only by seeking out
a problem’s underlying truth that we find the solution. Richard compares a
designer’s duty to the pilot’s prayer and calls on us to take an oath to use
our creative talents honestly and for good. He writes:
The Pilot’s Prayer
Pilots have a prayer.
They give thanks for
the gift of flight, whilst pledging to use this gift for good.
So this prayer is
really an oath.
We designers need an
Oath, an oath of fealty to The Truth.
In my experience, the
nearer you get to the truth in what you do, the easier the solution will
appear. If you truly understand the problem, the solution becomes evident, as
Bob Gill once said.
But the Truth is
crucial in every aspect of our work. In what we say and do and how we portray
it, because in the 21st Century, if you lie, you die.
You will be found out.
And the eternal sea
web will consume you.
A respected champion of design, Richard
regularly speaks at international conferences, including TED events, and has
won many design awards. During his career he has designed watches, kettles, cell phones and, more exotically,
space ship interiors. Maybe that’s what sparked his interest in the Pilot’s
Prayer.
He is
currently consultant global creative director of design to Unilever’s Dove, Axe
(Lynx) and Vaseline brands. Richard presented Channel 4’s TV series Better By Design with business partner
Dick Powell in 2000, which helped demystify the design process for many people.

experiences on design’s flight deck and how he goes about finding the truth.
